The figure hugging fabric is also sun smart with a UPF rating of 50+, the equivalent of leading sunscreens. Most of us never remember to put sun lotion underneath our swimsuits, so that extra protection is a real bonus.

It's these enduring qualities, rather than this swimsuit's looks, that will impress sun lovers. It's not an unattractive swimsuit, but it's far from fashion forward. The conservative cut and minimalist styling are all business. The range of colors, including this pretty bottle green hue, gives this one-piece a little personality, but it's hardly going to inspire envious stares on the sand.

This Chloroban one-piece is fashioned like Speedo's competition style racing swimsuits, but its quality isn't quite as good. However, its price is also much less than the leading brand. For just $49.99 it represents great value for swimmers on a budget.

Podiatrist Talks Flip Flop Dangers | Importance of Supportive Sandals

Sandals SandSpring has sprung, and we're all digging out our favourite flip flops and sandals. But not so fast. Podiatrist Dr. Steve Rosenberg has issued a timely reminder of the problems that can come with wearing the wrong pair of beach shoes.

Flip flops and other warm weather shoes are notorious for lacking the support out feet crave. Wearing these shoes on the beach, at the mall, and at the clubs afterwards can leave your feet feeling worse for wear in more ways than one. Dr. Rosenberg says that during the warm weather months he treats patients suffering a host of feet problems, including tired feet, muscle spasms, arch cramps, calluses, blisters, and lower leg pain. Even more disturbing is that these problems come from wearing the wrong footwear.

Warm weather doesn't need to be a podiatry pain though. You just need to choose the right beach shoes. Your feet should fit snuggly in your shoes as friction can cause calluses and blisters. Sandals and flip flops should also cradle your feet. A little support can go a long way. Beach shoes that allow orthotic inserts are ideal, but brands like Teva and Spring Step also offer many shoes with adequate arch support.

We all want to look cute on the beach, but there's nothing cute about hobbling about with sore feet. Thinking more carefully about your footwear choices this summer could save you some serious pain during the season.

The manufacturer claims this ball allows you to enjoy a game of beach volleyball any time, during the day or night. It all sounds good in theory, but sadly this retro styled ball doesn't live up to that hype. Many customers complain the glowing effect lasts for only a few minutes. Some shoppers say that if it's exposed to plenty of light before play it could last as long as 15 or 20 minutes, but that's still not long enough to really enjoy a good match.

However, Mikasa has a reputation for creating quality volleyballs, so the ball itself is quite sound. It's of regulation size and weight unlike so many glow in the dark balls on the market. Its soft stitched cover shouldn't hurt your hand too much when you spike or serve, and its synthetic leather should survive several summers of serious play.

And for a mere $17.99, perhaps that quality is the best we can hope for. That's not a lot to pay for any volleyball, whether it glows or not. Just don't expect it to illuminate any night time tournaments.

Nanette Lepore Madison Avenue Swim DressIndulge in New York City style on the beach this summer with this Madison Avenue Swim Dress from Nanette Lepore.

There's an awful lot going on here, perhaps too much. Yet Nanette Lepore's conviction and commitment to her design vision somehow makes this overembellished style work. The ruffles and rosettes along the bustline and shirring across the body may not impress minimalists, but they're bound to find fans amongst sun lovers with feminine tastes.

I don't have a problem with the frilly and fussy accents up top, but I think all that shirring overcomplicates the Madison Avenue's busy floral print. However I concede that it does wonders for the figure. If you're still carrying a few extra Christmas pounds, all that ruching should hide them.

It seems a little generous to call the Madison Avenue a swim dress though. It's so short that it's little more than a tankini! That will worry anyone that's self-conscious about their figure. But if you've got impressive pins and the confidence to match them, you'll be thrilled at the way the Madison Avenue turns heads.

At $164 this Nanette Lepore swim dress is on the expensive side, but New York City style never comes cheaply!

Lucky Brand Batik Rose Bikini | Pink & Green Triangle Swim Top

Lucky Brand Batik Rose BikiniLucky Brand takes its cues from the East with this Batik Rose bikini.

Real batik sees artisans dripping hot wax over their cloths before coloring them. The dye doesn't penetrate the wax covered spaces, and so we're left with pale markings once the substance is removed. Lucky Brand has taken some shortcuts here and used a print rather than the traditional wax. That's unsurprising for this price, but still disappointing for traditionalists.

While the print is a poor imitation of the traditional art, it's not a bad pattern in its own right. I'm not so fussed on the piping which separates the pink and green panels though. The blue accents are intended to create interest, but they just seem a bit messy.

While the print hasn't wowed me I really like the Batik Rose's design. Its halter straps are wider than the average, so they should provide extra support and be a bit more comfortable against your neck. I also appreciate the removable padding in the bra, which ensures the Batik Rose looks good on women of all shapes.

Lucky Brand's Batik Rose isn't one of the most impressive bikinis on the market, but at $50 it is one of the cheapest. If money matters you could do worse!

Jantzen Heritage Bandeau Bikini | Red Ruffled Swim Top

Jantzen Heritage BandeauRuffled bikinis are a dime a dozen, but the unusual placement of its frills helps Jantzen's Heritage Bandeau Bikini stand out.

I love what Jantzen has done with its soft ruffles. By restricting the flouncy fabric to just one side of the bandeau top, Jantzen's made its Heritage feel very modern. I expected a more traditional approach from a swimsuit with such a classic moniker, but I'm thrilled Jantzen's taken a fashion risk.

I also really like the Jantzen's sexy red color, although I'm surprised it's our only option. More sedate hues like black or navy would have no doubt expanded the Heritage's appeal.

It's important to consider the sizing carefully though, because the Heritage does run small. Petite women will no doubt appreciate that, but anyone on the busty side may need to order a top that's larger than their usual. I wouldn't worry if it's a little roomy, as the attachable shoestring strap will help hold it up. The clasp at the back, a more secure option than the traditional tie, should also give you peace of mind.

At $58 this Heritage Bandeau Bikini is well priced for a swim top that makes such a strong style statement.

Freya Rumjungle BikiniIf you thought plus-sized swimwear was all about blending into the background, think again. Freya goes bold with this Rumjungle Balcony bikini.

Few prints have the attitude of camouflage. The pattern is generally used for masculine apparel and military fatigues, so I'm thrilled to see it making an appearance in women's wear. Everyone know girls are just as tough as their male counterparts after all! This bold print is complemented by khaki colored straps and piping.

When looking at the Rumjungle's design it's important to consider Freya's target audience. The label makes swimwear especially for plus-sized girls, and it knows what they need. So while features like side boning and underwire beneath the bust might seem unnecessary and uncomfortable extras to smaller girls, they're essential for bigger beachgoers looking for support and figure-flattering style. And while those same petite sun lovers might want padding in the cups, Freya's target audience is happy to finally find an unlined swim top.

We usually pay a premium for good plus-sized wear, so I'm happy to see Freya's kept the Rumjungle's price down to an affordable $68. It's hardly small change, but it's very affordable for a bikini which combines such style and substance.

Seafolly Matt Separates BikiniIt might have one of the most boring monikers in the swimwear industry, but this Matt Separates bikini from Seafolly is a real head-turner.

Of course, anything in such a shocking shade of pink is bound to catch your eye. But this swimsuit has more than a striking color to attract attention. As if it wasn't already girly enough, this bikini top is decorated with soft ruffles.

The Matt Separates Swim top has a simple style, but it does a decent job of enhancing any figure. I particularly like the halter-neck design, as it supports our curves and gives them an attractive lift.

While the tie works at the neck, I'm not sure it's the best option for the back. This isn't an area we really need customization, so a more secure clasp would have been better. I'm not saying the tie will lead to a wardrobe malfunction, but you'll want to tie it tightly before you hit the beach!

Such a feminine swimsuit is bound to polarize opinion. Some of us will love its garish girlishness, but just as many beach lovers will hate the sugar rush. Thankfully it's also available in black, which really tempers its feminine details.

Buyamba Soles Signs Target Deal | Fair Trade Shoes Hit Department Store Chain

Buyamba Soles SandalsRetail chain Target will add ethical Buyamba Soles beach shoes to its fashion range.

Buyamba Soles' beaded flip flops and sandals are decorated by more than 200 women in Uganda. The women hand-roll bead decorations from old magazines and other papers, a process which saves the refuse from landfill. They earn fair wages for their efforts, money which allows them to raise their children, support their extended families, and give back to their communities.

Craig Hardy, the president of Buyamba Soles' parent company ACI, says the label is more than simply a feel-good initiative. Instead the firm looks to make a real difference in Uganda, a country that's been devastated by war, HIV, and AIDS.

It's a task that will be made much easier thanks to the new Target deal. That sponsorship has allowed ACI to donate $100, 000 to Buyamba Uganda, a charity which helps build schools and provide nutrition for the country's children.

Buyamba Soles beach shoes will be available for purchase from Target's website soon ahead of their April in-store launch. The company plans to introduce more shoes, handbags, and other accessories in time, and hopefully Target will pick up these products too.

The Sak Brand Group has just added footwear to its The Sak and Sakroots lines. The shoe range has something for all occasions and seasons, from flip flops for summer days on the beach to rainboots for stepping out on stormy winter evenings.

A range of traditional footwear styles are represented including boat shoes, ballet flats, sandals, and wedges. These shoes feature the same crochet, cork, and wood finishes and artistic prints we see on The Sak and Sakroots handbags. While it might look a bit matchy-matchy to carry the bags with their complementary shoes, it's great to see a fashion house with such a clear design vision.

It's also exciting to see The Sak Brand Group sticking to its affordable pricing policy. All The Sak shoes are priced under the magic $100 mark, and the Sakroots ones are even cheaper at less than $50 a pair.

While many labels often add new lines, this is a major development for The Sak Brand Group. The company calls this its "most exciting brand extension" in its history of more than two decades. While that might be overselling the new addition a bit, it's exciting to see The Sak Brands Group branching out with something we all need.

Lucky Brand Mystic Road Trip SkirtYou might never get to experience the free love of the flower power era, but you can wear fashion from the time with this Mystic Road Trip swim skirt from Lucky Brand.

Vivid teal, lime green, and purple paint seems to have been splashed all over this cute swimming skirt. The vibrant hues ooze into one another in a really trippy way.

The pattern is so dominant that it's easy to miss this swim skirt's details. The print makes it hard to see the ruffled layers and the wide waistband above. It seems a bit wasteful to obscure all those the ruffles, but the waistband makes sense. It'll sit comfortably against our bodies, whether we're enjoying the waves or soaking up rays on the sand.

As this skirt is made from a blend of nylon and spandex it'll work as well in the water or on dry land. It makes a feminine alternative to traditional board shorts or a cute cover-up. Just remember to hand wash it if you hope to retain those vivid hues after a few summers.

If it were simply a beach skirt I'd hesitate to spend $52 on it. But its versatility helps to justify that cost.

This whimsical white swimsuit is covered in sweet cherries. This fruity pattern is probably too cutesy to appeal to everyone, but I love the personality it brings. I'm not quite as sure about the jaunty bows that decorate the plunging neckline though. While they help us maintain a little modesty, they're also a bit childlike for my tastes. I suppose they're in keeping with the swimsuit's fanciful demeanor, but do you think they take things a step too far?

While the bows hide a bit of skin near the neckline, it all hangs out on the rear. The scoop back is very eye-catching, but it may make timid beachgoers feel uncomfortable. You'll definitely need confidence to pull this look off.

While it seems to put appearances first, we can always count on Nanette Lepore for first class craftsmanship. This swimsuit is expertly made, so if you care for it you needn't worry about those bows going astray.

Nanette Lepore has showed real commitment to her creative vision here. While it won't appeal to all sun lovers, it'll help its fans stand out on the beach for just $154.

This is such an eye-catching cover up. Its black bustier top seems simple, but it provides just the right contrast to that emerald green skirt. This soft skirt is made from silk and hand dyed for a very subtle tie-dyed effect. The gentle green and blue mottling is a world away from the bold tie-dyed favored by hippies, so it feels very contemporary. As the bottom half is made from silk you'll need to carefully hand wash it, but I think it's worth the effort, don't you?

It's also the kind of cover-up that will look just as good on anyone's body. The soft flared skirt hides a multitude of sins, but it doesn't appear like a tent. I love the soft draping down the front, which calls to mind the robes of Greek goddesses.

This Robin Piccone cover-up's versatility is its biggest strength. While many cover-ups start to look out of place too far from the shore, this dress would be perfect for swanning around any resort or relaxing at a coastal bar. It's that flexibility that sees me tempted despite its significant $158 price tag.

Sustainable fashion label The IOU Project has teamed up with Spanish eco-friendly surfboard company Along to create an ethically crafted madras board bag.

We all know madras is a checked Indian material generally handwoven by the country's artisans. But you might not know that the material is ideal for withstanding harsh coastal conditions. India's fishermen have long understood its durability, and so fashion the fabric into sarongs, head wraps, and knotted cover-ups called lungis.

The IOU Project is all about teaming up with companies that share its eco-friendly ethos. Previous collaborations have included joint ventures with Manifatture Di Padova, Calzados Lara, and Mundicorte. All IOU Project collaborative products are released in limited quantities to make them a bit more desirable. Several of its goods are made from madras, as the IOU Project believes in preserving the traditional craft of creating this colorful cotton cloth.

This surfboard cover is perfect for protecting Along's eco-friendly surfboards, which are all made from repurposed woods. No prices have been announced yet, but as madras is fairly inexpensive hopefully these surfboard covers will be more affordable than their non-ethical counterparts. We'll find out when these sustainable beach accessories hit the IOU Project and Along websites in time for summer.

Seafolly Avant Garden Bikini | Watercolor Underwire Swim Top

Seafolly Avant Garden BikiniA rainbow of colors helps this simply styled Avant Garden Bikini from Seafolly stand out from the crowd.

Its design is very clean, free of the frills, ruffles, and bows we've seen on so many Seafolly swimsuits. That might disappoint its girliest fans, but it helps the Australian swim label appeal to a new audience. Such a basic design could easily appear boring, but Seafolly avoids that with its expert use of color.

The swimsuit's name suggests we might see a pretty floral print, but the Avant Garden's finish is much more abstract. It reminds me of something one of the expressionist masters might have painted. The watercolor print is colorful but not bright enough to be garish.

The Avant Garden is structured like a sexy piece of lingerie, which is both a blessing and a curse. The underwire underneath the cups and boning at the sides do wonderful things for any figure. However with all those features sucking us in and keeping us in place, it's not very comfortable. Beauty is pain, as they say! It's up to you whether you can put up with a little discomfort to look this good.

Active beachgoers will probably prefer a style that's not so restrictive, but if you're on the sand to attract attention this Seafolly bikini should do the trick!

Bright, delicate flowers liven up this black triangle bikini. I really like the way Vix has picked up the colors of the dainty pink blooms in the shoestring ties. Clean marrow edging finishes this simple but pretty style off nicely.

The Ditsy doesn't do a lot to enhance our figures, but its halter-neck design gives the bust a nice lift. If you're petite this swimsuit will probably make you look as flat-chested as the model, but curvier girls should enjoy what this simple style does for their body. It's a shame then that the Ditsy's sizes run on the small side, as it's plus-sized girls that would probably look best in this style.

Considering how basic it looks, I'm surprised the Ditsy requires such intensive upkeep. Vix advises us to hand-wash this bikini in cold water before line drying it. Tumble drying and dry cleaning are out of the question, and bleaching out stains will also bleach out those pretty flowers.

It's not the cleverest swimsuit I've ever seen, but this bikini is far from the twit that Vix says it is!

Marilyn Monroe Voted Best Bikini Body | Vintage Actress Tops Swimsuit Poll

Marilyn Monroe BikiniMarilyn Monroe has beat out contemporary beauties for the title of best bikini body.

The silver screen siren topped the poll commissioned by British department store chain Debenhams. Her figure was seen as more enticing than that of other vintage actresses like Raquel Welch and modern goddesses including Christina Hendricks, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Jennifer Aniston.

The results suggest that the waif look is on the way out according to Debehams spokesperson Sasha Nagalingham.

"Our results tell us that looking great on the beach is not about being the thinnest or the youngest woman around," she explained. "Women are increasingly appreciative of figures that symbolize all the great things about womanhood."

The results seem to reflect the current state of the fashion industry. We've started to see models speaking out about the pressure to stay rail thin. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has recently released health guidelines for catwalk models, yet we still hear that Victoria's Secrets models are encouraged to eat nothing but egg powder and water before a runway show.

I don't know about you, but that kind of deprivation doesn't sound like a lot of fun. I'd much rather eat up and have Marilyn Monroe's curves, wouldn't you?

Miu Miu’s New Sunglasses Movies | Short Films Showcase Shades

Miu Miu is releasing a series of short films to sell its new sunglasses lines.

The first, called The Woman Dress, made its debut at a private screening in New York last night. Italian screen siren Maya Sansa stars in the eerie Giada Colagrande piece. Hollywood A-listers Mia Wakowski, Willem Dafoe, Channing Tatum, Leighton Meester, and Joe Jonas were all there to see the Miu Miu flick, and indulge the hors d'oeuvres. Fashion houses sure know how to throw parties!

While it's the first film to showcase the new Miu Miu sunglasses, it's actually the third in Miu Miu's cinematic Women's Tales Saga. The film series explores the way us girls go gaga for Miu Miu.

That concept sounds very romantic, but The Woman Dress is actually pretty morbid. Not in the Twilight in love with a vampire kind of way either. The Woman Dress is a very literal title, with the film showing models using a woman as the material in some creepy couture creation.

It's a strange setting to see Miu Miu's playful new sunglasses line launched. The Miu Miu Cultes shades are very quirky and cute with their oversized, handmade pentagon-shaped frames. They're available to pre-order now for $390 from the Miu Miu website.

All those straps hold your foot in place more securely than the pair we get on the average set of flip flops. That security makes the Olowahu perfect for a run along the sand or a game of beach volleyball. Comfort isn't compromised either. You don't feel trapped in these shoes thanks to the soft but sturdy nylon webbing.

The comfort doesn't stop there though. The Olowahu's sole is made from squishy EVA, which ergonomically cushions your feet as you walk or run. The sole is also patterned with tyre-like tread to help them grip to wet or dry surfaces. Not so coincidentally these are just the kind of surfaces we’ll encounter when we're hitting the beach.

It goes without saying that the Olowahus aren't the chicest pair of sandals. I wouldn't stray too far from the shore with them, but I do appreciate the personality that the various colored straps brings. There are sixteen options in all, so there's bound to be at least one to tempt you.

So many Olowahu fans replace them with another pair as soon as they wear out, which happily doesn't occur all too often. I think that sort of loyalty speaks for itself, don't you?
